Pink Mother of Pearl Shells
Found in the mighty Mississippi River, USA, theses shells have been cultivated since the late 1800's by the pioneers of the pearl farming industry.
Luméa Pink Mother of Pearl shells are sought after for their deep purple-pink colouring on the inside of the shell, and the lighter pink outside of the shell once the outside layer is removed.
Presented in two forms; Natural and Polished.
Finish
Polished
Both exterior and interior are polished, removing the protective outer skin of the Luméa Pink Mother of Pearl Whole Shells, revealing the vibrant pink or purple nacre on the shells outer side.
Natural
Unpolished exterior and minimally-cleaned interior. The Natural finish for Luméa Pink Mother of Pearl Whole Shells preserves the organic black skin layer on the back, and the inside retains its vivid pink colour. This pink mussel shell has two species which differ in size and thickness – Mules Ear is smaller with thick nacre, Heelsplitter is larger with thin nacre.
Uses
For customers who value the natural shape of this shell, this minimally processed option can be left as it is, added to unique design creations or alternatively, processed further into pieces. When polished, the strong pink colouring glistens and changes in shifting light.
Most commonly further processed into smaller pieces for inlay or jewellery components and buttons. The natural skin on the back shows the shell in its harvested state and keeps the shell protected on its journey around the world. This can be easily removed to reveal an amazing, pearlescent pink or purple natural colour.
